BCCNP temporarily removes additional education requirement for LPNs to perform nasopharyngeal swabs
Increased volume of nasopharyngeal swabs required due to COVID-19 emergency testing procedures.
The BCCNP Board has temporarily removed the requirement for licensed practical nurses to have additional education prior to performing nasopharyngeal swabs. This change is effective immediately and will remain in effect for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency in British Columbia.

LPNs still require a client-specific order to perform this activity, unless there is an order from the Health Authority’s Medical Health Officer or the Provincial Health Officer removing this requirement. Registrants and employers are reminded that prior to performing this activity, LPNs must be competent to perform the activity safely.
