This theme will focus on the role of governance and regulation in supporting health workforce innovations while mitigating public risk. Legal and regulatory frameworks underpin health workforce advances such as optimizing scopes of practice to ensure appropriate skill mix, supporting virtual practice and team-based care models, and facilitating inter-jurisdictional mobility. By examining Canadian and international models and recent reforms, the work in this theme will help to better understand how governance and regulation helps or hinders health workforce innovations.
Kathleen (Kate) Leslie is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Health Studies at Western University. Kate is a registered nurse and lawyer whose research interests include professional regulation. Her current research projects focus on mandatory reporting obligations of health professionals, international comparisons of regulated scopes of practice, and qualitative case studies examining health professional regulatory reform.
Chantal Demers is the Executive Coordinator for the Canadian Health Workforce Network. She holds a graduate diploma in program evaluation from the University of Ottawa and has over a decade of experience working in the health workforce field contributing to research and consultancy with and on behalf of the Canadian Health Workforce Network and the Ontario Health Human Resources Research Network previous to that. Her research interests focuses on international comparisons of health workforce minimum data standards and Pan-Canadian comparisons of health profession regulations including those pertinent to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion from both patient and health worker perspectives.
